Bathroom remodeling case history of a basement
bath
The job of bathroom remodeling can be one of
the most extensive and complex, but also one of the most financially and
visually rewarding, and can add much comfort and luxury to your home. But
it is important to try to work out the details of such a project early on,
in order to avoid miscommunication with workers and in order to keep
within a realistic budget.
One example of a bathroom remodeling that was planned well and executed in
less than a week, was in a home where there was a dark, musty basement
that was only used for storage. But the room had hook ups for a washer and
dryer and it also had a working toilet and sink, so this made the makeover
much easier, using existing plumbing. First, the windows in the basement
were replaced with clean glass that let in much more light, and the light
fixtures were upgraded to add more light. Then the bricks that were
deteriorating were covered up with a facade of mortar and natural stones,
laid so that most of the surface of the rock was showing and that the
depth was only about two inches from the original surface of the brick.
Then piping was run on an angle, to allow for proper pitch of the movement
of water, at approximately one quarter inch of grade per linear foot, and
a bathtub was installed, in the other side of the basement from the hook
ups for a washer, but it drained and was supplied with water from those
same hook ups, via piping that ran against the wall. Later a wall of glass
bricks was added, to separate the bath area from the toilet, and a new
sink made of polished concrete was installed, completing the job.
This bathroom remodeling project added a full bath to the house, added
about $10,000 in property value at the time the house sold, and cost a
grand total of about $1,200 to complete within a time frame of about 10
days.
