The corner shower stall
One of the easiest way to add a shower to a room is by using a corner
shower stall, which is a shower area that occupies a corner of the room
and opens into the side that the corner faces. These can be made from
masonry materials, such as concrete, brick, glass brick, or stone, and
then you can install a door made of wood or glass onto the shower for
access. Or you can frame one out of wood and sheetrock but on the shower
side, where it will get wet, you need to be sure to put some kind of water
resistant or water proof material like plastic paneling or ceramic tiles,
to keep the water from getting to the other materials and ruining them.
The idea of a corner shower stall is a good one, because usually designers
and decorators will agree that corners of rooms are the most commonly
under used spaces. We very rarely sit in the corner or stand in the
corner, and most of our furniture will not fit into a corner, so the
corner in a room is usually not used very efficiently. But putting a
shower into a corner not only saves space, it takes advantage of the fact
that most corners in homes are very structurally sound, because they are
the joining point for two walls, which are often structural or load
bearing walls. So if you attach a shower to those walls, it will be very
secure. Also, the inside of a corner is a good place to run pipes for a
shower, and the pipe can be bracketed right into the wedge of the V shape
of the corner.
The fastest was to install a shower as a corner shower stall is to go to a
home improvement center and choose a pre made shower, and these are
usually made from fiberglass or some other form of synthetic plastic. You
basically just set it up the way you might set up a piece of furntiture,
and the large structure that looks a bit like a large box, is attached to
the plumbing and walls and is ready to go. These pre made showers are also
the cheapest way to put in a shower, and the labor involved is minimal.
